Miscellaneous Posters

A selection of posters done over the years

The OddBall: This is a poster done for a University College Dublin event run by the Jazz Society, Hip-Hip Society and the Comedy Society called the Oddball. The event combined acts representing all three Societies, and the poster was designed to reflect this as well to stand out amongst the many other posters around campus. A combination of traditional and unusual typefaces, as well as a minimalist yet striking colour palette works to create a visually striking poster and sold out the night.

New Age Expressionists Exhibition: This poster was designed to advertise an exhibition run by the New Age Expressionists, a Dublin artists group. The poster had to accomodate the diverse range of styles and people involved in the group. I designed a minimalist and graphic poster to allude to a blank canvas onto which any style could be placed. The typography is contemporary and different emphasising that it was a current event and not totally out of touch with the normal passers-by.

Opera Ireland: This is a poster I did for Opera Ireland to advertise their Summer performances of Rigoletto and The Pearl Fishers. Since for me opera is all about the lyrics and musical resonance achieved from them, I illustrated the type to allude to the operatic content, with Rigoletto becoming a face and the Pearl Fishers a net, casting for the two pearls/eyes above.

UCD Free Legal Advice Centre: I was approached by the Free Legal Advice centre in UCD to design a poster advertising its services, as it felt that students either didn’t know it existed, or didn’t feel that it wasn’t relevant to them. I based the poster’s design around the strapline ‘Legal worries tearing you apart?’ which I’d devised. The idea was to show how students can get so stressed and worried by events seemingly beyond their control that they were tearing themselves apart over them, just because they didn’t know of, or didn’t use, their Free Legal Advice Centre. The poster campaign was quite successful and saw a significant increase in students coming into the centre for advice.

NYU Political Psychology Poster: This was a poster created for Jojanneke van der Toorn, who is both a doctoral student in New York University, and my girlfriend, as part of a presentation she gave at a conference in Croatia. The poster was presented at a ‘Poster Session’ whereby academics all show their work in large format posters (printed at 60x40” size) and others walk around to see the work and discuss it with the researcher. As such, it was important that the poster stand out from the crowd to draw the eye, as well as being clear and legible once up close. As Jojanneke is from Holland, I drew on the Dutch design style to subtly infuse the work with her own personality and style. The information was organised for the viewer (as opposed to more common, and less clear, academic formats). The colours combined the purple of NYU with the orange tones of Holland. Overall, the poster was highly successful, gaining a lot of exposure, attention and compliments from the other researchers for Jojanneke.

Stone Street Tavern Posters: These posters were designed in tandem with a new menu that I’d created for this popular New York financial district bar. The style of advertising used previously tended more towards the clip-art in Word variety. I decided to design the posters around a strong illustrative image, with the border and typography building on the brand elements set up in the new menu system. Bold colors and eye-catching graphics combined to ensure a full house for both events.
