ISPP Site

Wholescale site redesign for an international political research organization

ISPP is an interdisciplinary organization representing all fields of inquiry concerned with exploring the relationships between political and psychological processes. Members include psychologists, political scientists, psychiatrists, historians, sociologists, economists, anthropologists, as well as journalists, government officials and others. The Society is international, with members from all regions of the world: the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

The existing site had been made by members of the organization in 2005, and was now at a point where it was undermining their purpose and mission. It was outdated, amateur and hard to update. So, ISPP approached okellydesign with the task of bringing the site and the organization to a new level of professionalism befitting its status and reach.

I began by redesigning the organizations identity, evolving the mark from the ‘Psy’ mark which universally represents Psychology. It had been used in the previous mark, and it seemed best to retain its equity and ISPP’s ownership of it. However, it was formerly used quite literally (on a globe!) so I drew it in a contemporary fashion showing the different facets to the organization around the Political Psychology core mission. I then introduced new a typographic palette for ISPP using Chronicle and Whitney to allude to the organizations purpose of publishing research, balanced with the openness and approachability of the sans-serif.

After spending some time working on the site’s content to organize it all in a more logical and intuitive manner, the overall user interface and design began to take shape, building on the aesthetic and concept behind the identity. Sharp, clean lines help frame the dense typographic content of the site, offset by a soft color palette, and inviting imagery on the homepage. A full suite of typographic styles were designed to handle the many different types of content on the site as needed.

The site includes several new features for the organization, including a video section showcasing members talks and work as presented at the annual conferences, fully searchable directories of the membership, key media contacts and members conference abstracts. To better help run the organization, a new password-protected executive area for the officers and committee was made, wherein they can share thoughts, files and documents throughout the year in preparation for their biannual meetings.

Alongside this, there is a renewed focus on encouraging member participation through sharing their news & announcements, a member spotlight area, volunteering opportunities, and lastly a new donations area. This then builds to helping to promote understanding and knowledge of Political Psychology outside of the membership through the media section.

The site is built on a fully customized Content Management System, and the aim will be to further enhance and improve the site over the coming year with new sections and content.
