These are examples of vector illustrations I’ve done. They were all created as part of my work for the UCD Law Society in 2003, largely for the freshers week magazine. I must point out that this was before the ‘Live Trace’ option in Illustrator, so they were all drawn from scratch based on photographs.
1. As part of 80s day, the Law Society brought two members of the A-Team, Dirk Benedict and Dwight Schultz to UCD. This is the A-Team van, and is part of an illustration specifically highlighting this major event in the magazine.
2. This was done for a spread in the Law Society’s magazine relating to Roebuck House, which is where the law faculty is based.
3. This is Airwolf, and was drawn for the 80s day spread. The 80s day is a major fixture in the Law Society calendar and this is just one aspect of the decade put forward to remind the students why they love it so much.
4. This is for a spread about junkets within the society, and how debating can bring you to far-flung places.
5. This is an illustration of Dirk Benedict and Dwight Schultz in one of their many costumes from the show. Dirk played Templeton Peck better known as Face. Dwight played Murdock, and is shown in his pilots costume. They came to speak to the society as part of 80s Day.
6. Over the year, the Law Society invite guests to the campus to participate in debates in which they might have an interest. Michael Flatley, a noted boxer before he became Lord of the Dance, came to UCD to speak in the boxing debate. This illustration was done for a poster advertising the event, showing Michael as he might have looked in his boxing days, and fully ready to take on the opposition in this debate.
7. This is a rubix cube, drawn as part of the 80s day spread in the UCD Law Society Magazine.
8. For a spread about debating, which is the primary function of the society, I drew its Auditor as a Ché Guevara type figure, albeit with contemporary student clothing, ready to inspire an audience with his wit and razor sharp debating skills.
9. This is an illustration created for the Nuclear Power debate poster. The debate was chaired by Harry Shearer, better known as the voice of Montgomery Burns from the Simpsons.
10. This is a sample spread from the Freshers Week magazine, showing how some of these illustrations were used.
